Inclusive and Person-Centred Workplace Investigations: Building Safe, Fair and Supportive Investigations
Description
Inclusive and Person-Centred Workplace Investigations: Building Safe, Fair and Supportive Investigations
Course Overview
Online
Every person who walks into a workplace investigation brings their own history - shaped by culture, lived experience, and potentially by trauma or neurological difference. How you engage with them will influence not just the evidence you gather, but their trust in the process and their wellbeing during and after it.
This half-day workshop equips internal investigators with the awareness, language, and practical tools to conduct investigations through a trauma-informed, neuroinclusive, and culturally responsive lens without compromising procedural fairness, objectivity, or the integrity of the process. This is not ‘suggested’ best practice. Under many Australian safety and industry codes and regulations, this approach is now an expected standard.
Two Expert Perspectives. One Room.
What makes this workshop distinctive is the combination of expertise you will learn from directly. This workshop is run by one of Q Workplace Solutions senior investigators who will be joined by a Clinical Psychologist specialising in organisational trauma and PTSD. The trainers will bridge the clinical foundation of trauma, neurodiversity, and cultural difference into practical investigative application - translating theory into the real-world decisions, language, and adjustments investigators make every day.
What the Workshop Covers
Understanding the Clinical and Theoretical Foundation
What neurodiversity is, who it covers, and why approximately 1 in 5 people you investigate may be neurodivergent - including many who have not disclosed or do not yet know
How neurodivergent profiles affect communication, memory retrieval, and engagement in a formal investigation
The language of neurodiversity - preferred terminology, what to avoid, and a practical rule of thumb for investigators
Culture as a concept far broader than ethnicity or language - what sits below the surface and most commonly affects investigations
Key cultural dimensions relevant to investigators and how to reflect on your own cultural framework as an investigator
The neurobiology of trauma - how the brain's stress responses shape a participant's memory, recall, and capacity to engage in a formal process
How trauma, neurodivergence, and culture can intersect and compound - and why the same behaviours in a participant can emerge from very different causes
Taking a Person-centred Practice Across Your Investigation
What person-centred, inclusive practice looks like as an investigator - guided examples and scenarios drawn from real investigative practice
The investigator's critical balance - understanding neurodivergence, trauma, and culture as relevant context, not a defence, while keeping factual findings separate from clinical determinations
Receiving a complaint and planning - proactive steps to embed inclusive adjustments from the outset, before you meet any participant
Conducting the interview - setup, building rapport, plain language, questioning technique, managing non-linear accounts, and understanding the limits of chronological recall
Recognising and managing hyper-arousal during an interview - practical, non-clinical strategies that protect both the integrity of the evidence and the wellbeing of the participant
Assessing evidence without assumptions and analysing inconsistencies through the right lens
Delivering outcomes in plain language - including how to explain what a finding of 'not substantiated' actually means to a participant
Investigator self-care - recognising the signs of vicarious trauma and why accessing support is a professional strength
What You Take Away
Participants leave with workbook and guide with scripted language examples for conducting inclusive interviews and a practical framework for applying a trauma-informed, neuroinclusive, and culturally aware lens across each stage of the investigation.
This workshop is a useful foundational start for internal investigators to learn these concepts and understand how they apply in their everyday investigations.
