    If you work for a NADA member or are part of a NADA member Network, you're invited to the training, 'COMING IN- Inclusive Practice for working with people with diverse sexualities, genders, and bodies from Refugee Backgrounds'. The training will be facilitated by the NSW Service for the Treatment and Rehabilitation of Torture and Trauma Survivors (STARTTS). While the training is not AOD specific, it is designed to support workers with their service provision to LGBTQIA+ clients with refugee backgrounds in a general sense, covering topics like LGBTQIA+ definitions, refugee trauma-informed care, and cultural transition.

    Workshop overview and aims

    This workshop focuses on building understanding of specific issues faced by people with a refugee background who identify as members of the LGBTIQA+ community; including strengths, vulnerabilities and the risks experienced in their home countries, during the journey and resettling in Australia. It will highlight the multiple oppressions faced and explore the diversity of needs and experiences that are grouped under the LGBTIQA+ framework.

    The training will explore:
    • definitions, identity and diversity;
    • the complex challenges of refugee trauma, dislocation, resettlement and cultural transition;
    • refugee trauma informed care, sexual diversity and different faiths.

    The workshop will increase participant’s awareness of how to identify assumptions or biases that may impact negatively on the provision of effective assistance, and how to enhance the ability to work in partnership with LGBTIQA+ clients. With an aim to enable services to become safer and more welcoming for all their clients.

    The training is practical and based on realistic and useful strategies for inclusive practice.

    If you have any queries about this training, please contact Hannah (hannah@nada.org.au) or Egbert (egbert@nada.org.au) at NADA.
