MWSOG are a seven-piece Welsh collective reshaping contemporary folk through a bold, ritualistic lens. Drawing deeply from Welsh traditional music, 1970s acid folk and psychedelic rock, they forge a sound that feels ancient in spirit yet resolutely modern - hypnotic, visceral and distinctly their own.
At the heart of MWSOG is storytelling as a living, communal force. Their music explores land, resistance, memory and collective identity through layered instrumentation, driving rhythms, repetition and rich vocal harmonies. Central to this is the commanding voice of Mari Mathias, whose delivery moves fluidly between intimacy and incantation.
Rather than recreating Welsh folk traditions, MWSOG reframe them. Ancient melodies and stories collide with psychedelia, heavier textures and an experimental instinct, creating music that draws from the past without being bound by it. That philosophy carries into their live performances, where songs expand into immersive, participatory experiences built around ritual, movement and collective energy.
MWSOG emerged on Welsh label BWGiBWGAN with debut single “Chwyldro” in autumn 2025, marking the first recorded output from a project that had already begun building a formidable live reputation. Their breakthrough arrived with second single “Llef Hir” in February 2026. Named Track of the Week on the BBC Introducing Mixtape by Emily Pilbeam, the track sparked remarkable support across BBC Radio 6 Music, with plays and backing from Emily Pilbeam, Lauren Laverne, Huw Stephens, Nick Grimshaw and Craig Charles. MWSOG were subsequently selected as a BBC Radio 6 Music Featured Artist of the Month.
Their ascent continued with third single “Gododdin”, which won the BBC Radio 6 Music Roundtable. International support followed from KEXP, introducing MWSOG’s ritual-charged sound to audiences beyond the UK, while John Kennedy championed the band through X-Posure on Radio X.
The momentum has been matched by a rapidly growing live reputation. In summer 2026 MWSOG took their music beyond Wales to headline the main stage at Germany’s Rudolstadt Festival, before delivering a standout performance to a packed Walled Garden at Green Man Festival.
The response to Green Man captured the impact of the band in full flight. BBC Introducing’s Adam Walton placed the performance “right up there with the finest sets I’ve ever seen at Green Man”, describing the “Mabinogi-gone Sabbath genius of MWSOG”. God Is In The TV declared that MWSOG helped “steal the show”, calling them “acid-folk adventurers” whose performance added to the festival’s “heightened sense of psychedelia”. Huw Stephens similarly named their set among the highlights of his Green Man weekend, describing the band as “phenomenal”.
Rooted firmly in Cymru but increasingly reaching audiences far beyond it, MWSOG are creating a world where Welsh tradition, psychedelia, ritual and collective performance meet. This is folk music treated not as something to preserve behind glass, but as a living form - capable of evolving, resisting, remembering and creating something entirely new.
