About the event
Ever wondered how translation works? In this literary showdown, our translators will go head-to-head, each translating the short story Dua Pengantin from Indonesian novelist and sociologist Okky Madasari into English. As they compare and defend their choices live on stage, join us to discover just how intricate and subjective literary translation can be. Madasari joins the conversation to reflect on seeing her work translated and the challenges and possibilities of writing across languages.
Expect a 60-minute panel discussing Indonesian translation with excerpts read by current University of Melbourne students.
Indonesian Translation Slam is the second session in the New Humanity Makers program from the Melbourne Public Humanities Initiative bringing visionary leaders whose work defies disciplinary boundaries to illuminate their practices.
About the speaker
Okky Madasari
Okky Madasari is an Indonesian novelist and sociologist whose work explores injustice, discrimination and questions of humanity, with a particular focus on literature, censorship and freedom of expression. She has published five novels, a short-story collection, children’s novels and nonfiction, including Maryam, which won the 2012 Khatulistiwa Literary Award, and The Years of the Voiceless, Bound and The Last Crowd, which have been translated into English. Madasari holds a PhD from the National University of Singapore and is the co-founder and program director of the ASEAN Literary Festival. She has also represented Indonesian literature internationally through writing residencies, literary festivals and speaking engagements.
