Influences, Impacts & Interventions: Exploring Issues Around Young People's Experiences of Family and Domestic Violence

Keynote speakers:

Professor Kate Fitz-Gibbon is a globally recognised scholar in violence against women and children. Kate is a Professor (Practice) at Monash Business School and an Honorary Professorial Fellow at Melbourne Law School. Kate has worked extensively with victim-survivors, practitioners, and policymakers to develop evidence-based solutions that influence real-world change. Kate’s research has shaped policy submissions to national and international law reform bodies, has been cited by the High Court of Australia, and has been published in 8 books and over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles. She has led consultations and public reports for key organisations, including the Commonwealth Department of Social Services, the Victorian, South Australian and ACT Governments, the Fair Work Commission, and the Australian Institute of Criminology. In 2021, she was appointed Chair of Respect Victoria, a role she held until July 2026. In July 2026 she was appointed Chair of the Victorian Collaborative Centre for Mental Health and Wellbeing. She also sits as a member of the Victorian Children’s Council, and in 2024, Kate was named a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum.

Matt Tyler has completed internationally significant research and groundbreaking program design as well as delivery related to preventing men's violence, addressing child sexual abuse and improving outcomes for children and young people. Trained as an economist with over 15 years working across social services, Matt is an Adjunct Associate Professor at Monash University and at the UNSW. Matt is a member of Childlight’s East Asia & Pacific Hub Board at the UNSW and Board Director at Sexual Assault Services Victoria. From April 2019 to April 2026, Matt served as Executive Director of The Men’s Project at Jesuit Social Services, where he led with a team committed to reducing violence, preventing child sexual abuse and promoting flourishing amongst men and boys themselves. His role included leading research on the Adolescent Man Box as well as Australia’s first child sexual abuse perpetration prevalence study with an emphasis on translating this research into practice as well as policy. He has led on design and development of Australia’s first helpline – Stop it Now! – to prevent child sexual abuse by engaging with those at-risk of offending as well as a similar program for young people, What’s OK? Australia. He has overseen a range of programs to prevent violence / abuse across schools and other settings working with adolescents who have often experienced harms themselves.
