Event description

The UTSFaculty of Law – Criminal Justice Cluster invites you to an insightful panel discussion on the Walama List, a pioneering initiative in the NSW District Court designed to address the overrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the criminal justice system. ‘Walama,’ meaning ‘come back’ in the Dharug language, reflects the court’s goal to reconnect offenders with their identity, culture and community while fostering a healthier, crime-free future.

The Walama List adopts a holistic, therapeutic approach to sentencing, working closely with Elders, respected community members and various services to address underlying causes of offending. By doing so, it aims to reduce reoffending and promote community safety.

We are honoured to have a distinguished panel, including His Honour Judge Hunt, Elder Aunty Barbara O'Neill and Solicitor Alycia Nicholas (Legal Aid NSW), who will provide deep insights into the operation of the Walama List and its impact on the criminal justice system.

This is a unique opportunity to learn how cultural authority is integrated into the legal process and hear first-hand from those involved in this innovative approach to justice. Don’t miss this chance to engage in meaningful dialogue about supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through legal reform.

This event is open to academics, practitioners and students who wish to learn about the Walama List. UTS Law Students are eligible to claim 5 ROJ points from the Brennan Program for this event.
