Inside the GP Consultation by Lucy O'Hagan

Te Atamira is delighted to welcome GP, author and storyteller Lucy O’Hagan for Everything But the Medicine - a funny, poignant and deeply human one-woman show that takes us inside the extraordinary everyday world of general practice.

In just 55 minutes, Lucy brings 32 different characters to life, drawing us into the conversations, encounters and human stories that unfold behind the closed door of the GP consulting room.

After more than 30 years as a GP, Lucy knows that medicine is rarely just about medicine. It’s about people - their fears, humour, relationships, grief, resilience and the unexpected things they bring through the door.

Lucy spent 20 years at Aspiring Medical Centre in Wānaka and has more recently worked at a needle exchange clinic and with Ngāti Toa Rangatira at Ora Toa Cannons Creek in Porirua. Her book, Everything But the Medicine: A Doctor’s Tale, was published by Massey University Press in 2025 and longlisted for the Ockham New Zealand Book Awards.
