Inspired by Nature: Printmaking with Rachel Dun

This two-day workshop will explore the art of linocut printmaking using the natural world as inspiration. Through hands-on practice and creative experimentation participants will learn the fundamental principles, tools, safety considerations and techniques of carving and printing lino blocks to express their connection to nature. Students will finish the course with a solid foundation in linocut printing and a collection of original prints, with the knowledge and confidence to continue their printmaking journey independently or in more advanced classes.

Day one introduces designing, transferring, carving, inking, and printing on lino block, creating bold, graphic designs that reflect the beauty and complexity of the natural world. Participants will print onto a selection of artist-quality papers to explore how different surfaces enhance the character of prints and completing a small edition of initial works.

Building on these skills, day two will explore two-colour lino printing using reduction techniques. Participants will learn how to layer colour and refine compositions to capture the richness and diversity of nature, producing a small edition of two-colour prints on artist-quality paper.

Bio

Rachel Dun is a printmaker and educator who has lived in Northern NSW for more than 30 years. Her practice is deeply connected to the natural environment and shaped by walking, close observation and a strong sense of place.

Working across metal plate etching, woodblock, linocut, monoprint and experimental printmaking processes, Rachel explores the fragility of the natural world and the impact of human presence. Her prints and artist books capture moments of quiet observation, memory and connection to place.

Rachel’s work is held in the State Library of New South Wales collection, and she exhibits throughout Australia.
