International Education Policy In and For Australia - A Forum
Event description
International education is at a crucial turning point in Australia. The election of the Albanese Labor government in 2022 ushered in a more consultative policy environment with all of the education sectors, and the wider community. This is best evidenced in the Australian Universities Accord process, which delivered its final report in February 2024. More recent change processes, especially in relation to proposed international student caps, have received a diversity of responses. And education stakeholders have been engaging in significant negotiation and jockeying for influence over the shape of international education policy.Â
Key considerations
Other, more longstanding policy areas come into play in an ongoing, wide-ranging policy reform agenda, as can be seen in the Australian Strategy for International Education 2021-30, which was introduced by the Coalition government in 2021 but remains the policy of the current government. Immigration and changes to international student visa regulation have been made on the back of the government’s Rapid Review into the Exploitation of Australia’s Visa System and the broader Review of the Migration System.
Important additional issues on table include:
• regulation and law;
• curricula and assessment;
• how to connect the levels and the sectors of education;
• the diversity of international student source countries;
• international student experience and wellbeing; the nation’s skills agenda; and
• the nexus between international education and soft-power diplomacy.
