Intersex Awareness Day BBQ + Panel: "Intersex Beyond Advocacy"
Event description
Continue the Intersex Awareness Day celebrations with us at the Salthouse Community Centre for a BBQ dinner followed by this year's Intersex Awareness Day panel "Intersex Beyond Advocacy". Want to hear about all the cool, creative and engaging ways intersex people create spaces, share stories and make meaning? Come and engage with our panel of community leaders for a discussion about what a creative community connection can look like.
Here are the panellists:
- Steph Lum is an intersex advocate, poet, and the founder of YOUth&I, an intersex youth anthology that shares the stories and experiences of young intersex people. Founded in 2019, YOUth&I provides a platform for young intersex creatives to express themselves through artwork and writings. Steph's poetry has been published in various notable publications, including the Australian Poetry Journal and Not Very Quiet. They are also actively involved in intersex law reform and has previously worked with the Australian Human Rights Commission. You can find out more about YOUth&I at https://youthandi.org/
- Bonnie Hart is the Deputy Executive Director of Intersex Human Rights Australia (IHRA) and the founder of the Interlink project. As an intersex woman and systemic advocate, Bonnie has dedicated her career to improving access to affirmative, rights-based health and mental health services for the intersex community. She designed Interlink, Australia's first community-controlled intersex psychosocial support program, which provides free individual and group counselling to people with innate variations of sex characteristics, as well as their parents and caregivers. Find out more at https://www.ilink.net.au/
- Paul Byrne-Moroney is the host of The I in Us, a pioneering radio show on JOY 94.9. Launched in February 2024, the show is dedicated to the intersex community, featuring news, stories, lived experiences, music, and discussions about all things intersex. With Paul at the helm, the show continues to raise the profile of the intersex community and provide a platform for intersex authenticity. The show streams online every Wednesday at 6-7pm (AEDST) or catch up on the podcasts at https://joy.org.au/theiinus/.
This event is a space for all intersex, trans, and gender-diverse people, as well as their friends and families! All are welcome!
