Event description

Intramuscular Stimulation – Treating trigger points from a different angle

Gunn’s intramuscular stimulation is a technique to treat myofascial pain syndrome, specifically using dry needling. Gunn’s theory considers a trigger point as a dysfunction of the nervous system, with the driving cause being the nerve root that innervates the muscle containing the trigger point. Gunn’s model was developed in the 1970’s from his own clinical observations treating injured workers. Today we can consider Gunn’s model in the context of our modern understanding of pain science, trigger points and myofascial pain syndrome.

In this webinar we will discuss Gunn’s comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic model of trigger points that can be an effective and novel way to understand and treat myofascial trigger points. His model connects the dots between radiculopathy, neuropathy and myofascial pain and accounts for many of the paradoxes of the traditional model of trigger point pain that the nociceptive model and inflammatory models cannot. Gunn’s approach can be a simple but innovative way to understand, diagnose and treat myofascial trigger points.
