Ever dreamed of building something with your own hands but not sure where to start?
Join our Introduction to Carpentry course and gain the confidence to tackle home projects or take your first step toward a career in carpentry.
Perfect for complete beginners, this hands-on, practical course introduces essential carpentry techniques using reclaimed timber and a variety of tools. Under the guidance of an experienced instructor, you'll build foundational skills while creating a custom storage crate to take home.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, participants will:
Accurately measure, mark, and cut materials to plan
Apply good woodworking practices using hand and power tools
Learn the properties and handling of reclaimed timber
Gain confidence using power tools
Complete a small take-home project (timber storage crate)
Understand general safety procedures in a woodworking environment
Course Overview
Safety & Workshop Housekeeping + PPE and tool safety
Project Brief: Introduction to the storage crate project
Timber 101: Characteristics of reclaimed wood & sustainability considerations
Sawing Techniques: Handsaw, jigsaw & drop saw use and safety
Measure, Mark, and Cut: Accuracy and plan interpretation
Joinery Basics: Working with nails, hammers, and wood glue
Drills & Drivers: Drilling pilot holes and fixing with screws
Finishing Touches, sanding, and final assembly

Complete beginners with no prior woodworking experience

What to Bring
Any hand or power tools you'd like to practice with (optional)
If you have your own PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) bring it along, otherwise use ours.
Lunch (or purchase from nearby cafes)
Wear old clothes, closed-in shoes, and tie back long hair
Avoid jewellery and loose accessories
No heels
Tools & Materials
All major tools and materials are provided by The Bower. You’ll gain hands-on experience using both hand and power tools in a safe and supportive environment.

Entrance to workshop
Workshop entrance is via Turner Street at the rear of 107 Redfern St. If the doorway is locked and/or unattended pls ring the doorbell on the left of the roller door.

Bower Woodworks is located within 5-minute walking distance of Redfern Train Station. Both metred and unmetered parking are available nearby.
