Intro to Fern Identification

Learn about fern identification and a little bit of geology while getting introduced to a biodiverse property in Littleton. Ferns are a unique part of our natural environment, but it can be a challenge to identify individual species. We’ll discuss what characteristics to look for to help identify ferns, without technical jargon. We’ll then go for a walk to see how many of our most common fern species can be found. The geology at Smith influences the flora present. As a result, there are also some less common ferns growing at this property. Elizabeth Perry is a geologist living in Shirley and a member of the Pioneer Valley Fern Society of western Massachusetts.
