    Event description

Love manga? Looking for another way to tell stories to children? Or you just love stories, period.

Bring out the visual and oral teller in you through Kamishibai (or paper theatre). Learn how you can tell a story using picture cards.

Kamishibai is a Japanese storytelling artform that involves a tabletop stage, a set of paper cards inserted in the stage, and a storyteller who narrates the story while sliding the cards out one at a time, as the story progresses.

Kamishibai is simple, clever, and highly interactive! It is a blank canvas for various story formats (i.e., contemporary tales, non-fiction, fairytales, short stories, etc.)

It welcomes many visual styles and creative interpretations. With a bit of imagination and visualisation (maybe even humour) and a wild love for stories, anyone can add this format to their storytelling toolbox!

    What will we cover?

This hands-on session you will learn:

    • About the history of kamishibai and how it was a precursor of Japanese manga
    • How is kamishibai different from writing and illustrating for picture books
    • What makes kamishibai stories magical
    • Storyboarding skills
    • How to make your own kamishibai story (for children or for adults) to take home

You will also receive a list of go-to resources (developed with the Australian Kamishibai Association) on getting started with Kamishibai.

    What should I bring?

    • Feel free to bring a digital device if you would prefer to create your story using an iPad or laptop, rather than drawing by hand.

    Who will be teaching?

Anna (she/her) is a children’s storyteller, author and storytelling coach. She writes and performs stories in different styles and specializes in kamishibai (paper theatre).

Wearing her educator-storyteller hat, she loves being helpful when it comes to bridging the story artist's work and the audience’s world. She helps creatives get paid to tell children’s stories through her live and online classes.

Anna’s a word nerd – having grown up in a bilingual family in the Philippines, lived in Thailand and was taught Thai by her students, and competed in professional Scrabble in her past life.
