Introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC) (Mar 2025) - NCI

This workshop is being run as part of a collaboration between Queensland Cyber Infrastructure Foundation (QCIF) and National Computing Infrastructure (NCI).

This workshop provides participants with a comprehensive introduction to High Performance Computing (HPC) and hands-on training with the Gadi supercomputer, Australia’s most powerful CPU-based research system. The workshop covers the fundamentals of HPC, the architecture and capabilities of Gadi, and practical skills for accessing, navigating, and utilising the system for computational research tasks. Participants will learn how to securely connect to Gadi, manage software environments, write and submit job scripts, optimise computational workflows, and avoid common pitfalls. Designed for researchers the workshop helps participants to gain confidence in using Gadi to accelerate their research.

This workshop will take place over three days (9:30-2:30pm AEST / 10:30-3:30pm AEDT): 18th to 20th February. Please only register if you are able to fully commit to attending *all* three sessions.

What should I bring into the event?

This is an online workshop, so you will need to provide your own computer, and have access to a reliable internet connection sufficient for video conferencing. A second monitor is highly recommended.  This workshop will run on NCI ARE platform, instructions will be provided prior to the workshop.  

Chromebooks and tablets are not suitable for this workshop; you will need a full-function computer.

What prior experience do I need?

- Basic familiarity with command-line interfaces

- Knowledge of general computing concepts

Who should attend?

This workshop is open to all researchers from Australian Universities and researchers from organisations utilising the National Computing Infrastructre (NCI).

This workshop is designed for researchers with minimal HPC experience.

What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellations are accepted up to 72h before the start of the workshop. If you do not join on the day without having cancelled beforehand, you may be blocked from attending any future QCIF training workshops.
