Introduction to HPC

This event has passed Get tickets

Event description

High-Performance Computing, or HPC, is the use of computers orders of magnitude faster and more powerful than even the best desktop PC. As research becomes more and more data-intensive, an ever broader range of researchers are using HPC for their data analysis. This workshop will give you an introduction to using high-performance computing systems effectively (as well as their limitations), and will introduce the basics of how to access a HPC cluster, load and use software, and submit jobs to run.

N.B. You must set up an account on an HPC system prior to attending this workshop. QCIF can assist with this, but only if notified in advance.

FAQs

What should I bring into the event?

This is an online workshop, so you will need to provide your own computer and have access to a reliable internet connection sufficient for video conferencing. A second monitor is highly recommended.

You will need to have access to an HPC system to participate in this practical workshop. Contact your QCIF eResearch Analyst or your local eResearch or research computing support team for assistance with getting an account.

What prior experience do I need?

While not essential, basic experience with Linux or Unix is highly recommended for this workshop.

Who should attend?

Anyone who intends to use a HPC cluster or is already using a HPC cluster for their research. The workshop is based around the use of the command line, and will be of limited use for researchers accessing HPC systems using remote desktop or graphical user interface (GUI) connections.

How can I contact the organiser with any questions?

You can email training@qcif.edu.au

What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellations are accepted up to three working days before the start of the workshop. If you do not join on the day without having cancelled beforehand, you may be blocked from attending any future QCIF training workshops.
