Event description

Learn how to support people through change using motivational interviewing, a therapeutic, person-centred approach to evoke a person's own motivation to make change happen.

Introduction to motivational interviewing is a one-day, online training course designed to develop the skills and techniques of motivational interviewing communication.

This course is designed for workers who support people to make life changes, including those working in:

  • mental health (including peer workers)
  • alcohol and other drugs
  • employment
  • community services
  • allied health.

You will learn about:

  • the principles underpinning motivational interviewing
  • the spirit of motivational interviewing
  • motivation and ambivalence and exploring the stages of change
  • exploring change talk
  • OARS and applied applications of motivational interviewing
  • self-care and its benefits.

This training is the first in a two-part series delivered by MHCC NSW, provided by MHCC ACT. Once you have completed this introductory course, you can also undertake the advanced session of this course.

We have allocated two identified places for further subsidised training for persons working for an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation, or who identify as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person.

Note: if there is significant interest and a waitlist is required, priority will go to MHCC ACT member organisations.
