Introduction to Skinnfell - Sittunderlag

Norwegian Skinnfell entails stitching and wood block printing on tanned sheep skins. Traditionally used for warm bedding on cold winter nights, Skinnfell traps (blankets) were made from multiple hides that were carefully stitched together and then decorated with motifs meant to convey good wishes to the receiver. In this introductory class, we will design and imprint sheepskin into a 16”x16” chair pad (or wall hanging). In addition to wood block printing, students will learn how to apply a variety of stitched edgings. This step can be omitted, but if not, good hand strength is needed. Small jewelry pliers help. Students are asked to bring a clear plastic ruler, small sharp scissors and eyeglasses if needed. Everything else is provided. A leather thimble and jewelry pliers
are also recommended.
