Whether you’re an aspiring street artist or simply a beginner wanting to explore mural art, this course equips you with the skills, techniques, and confidence to design and paint your own mural. Explore the cultural significance of street art, discover professional tools and materials, and unleash your artistic expression in a practical, hands-on environment.

By the end of this street mural painting workshop, you should be able to:

  • Understand a basic history and cultural significance of street murals.

  • Identify and use tools and materials for mural painting.

  • Design and sketch a mural suitable for public spaces.

  • Apply techniques to paint a mural on a temporary surface.

  • Recognise ethical considerations and permissions required for public art.

Course content

This basics-to-street mural painting workshop covers:

Introduction to Street Murals

  • A brief overview of the history and evolution of street art, from ancient murals to current practices.

  • An overview of cultural impact of murals and the distinction between public art and vandalism.

  • Learn the importance of ethics, permissions, and community engagement.

Tools, Materials, and Techniques

  • Discover the pros and cons of paints (acrylics, spray paint) and tools like brushes, stencils, and masking materials.

  • Practise fundamental techniques such as blocking, layering, blending, and detailing.

Mural Design Fundamentals

  • Understand mural composition, focal points, and colour theory for large-scale art.

  • Learn design methods using grids and freehand sketching, and discuss projections

  • Emphasise scale, proportion, and the intended message of your mural.

Painting the Mural

• Prepare surfaces, mark out designs, and arrange tools.

• Develop skills in laying base colours, building layers, and adding texture and details.

• Work on a designated space or panel to create your own mural.

Final Touches and Wrap-Up

• Add outlines, highlights, and finishing touches to your mural.

• Learn about sealing and protecting murals for longevity.

• Recap workshop highlights and explore further resources.

Materials provided

Participants will have access to:

• Acrylic paints

• Brushes ( Various sizes), mixing trays.

• Sketching tools like pencils, markers, or chalk.

• Stencils, tape, and protective equipment (gloves, masks).

• A prepared surface for painting and drop sheets

Things to prepare:

  • an image that catches your interest for a painting idea. Keep in mind the walls are in portrait composition, so you can pick a portrait, an object, nature a scene and you be will be assisted in executing the ideas over the day.

  • A smartphone or tablet with procreate, photoshop or canva to help with creating a reference for your mural 

  • Not a bad idea to bring a power bank 

  • Also helpful to save some images of murals you like to share the idea of your influences.

The session concludes with feedback, reflections, and guidance on pursuing mural art, including local mural projects and street art festivals.
