Introduction to Visible Mending
Description
Come join the movement to celebrate mending, embrace imperfection and resist fast fashion.
With needle and thread and very basic stitches, learn how to repair, add flair to and extend the life of clothes you love.
We’ll look at the philosophy behind the movement, get inspiration from traditional Japanese Boro and Indian Kantha.
We will explore a few techniques of mending, including darning – a technique best suited for knit items like sweaters, though suitable for other fabrics.
If you have something you’d like to mend, bring it along and we can look at options to use.
Supplies are provided (including “holey bits” for practice), but bring scissors, needles, thread and scraps of fabric, if you have them.
Previous stitching experience helpful but not needed.
Lyn is a mixed-media artist who has been sewing and stitching ever since she could thread a needle. Mending, both utilitarian and self-expressive, is an important part of her pragmatic and artistic way of being in the world.
