Full Day Training: Introduction to working in Reproductive Rights
Event description
Event description
This workshop aims to build your skills and confidence in discussing pregnancy options, identifying reproductive coercion and abuse, and supporting clients through and post their abortion. This workshop examines a brief history of reproductive justice throughout the Australian sexual health sector—including what abortion provision and reproductive coercion and abuse looks like, as well as clients’ rights—and how to apply current best practice to the needs of clients and individuals.
This event will explore intersectionality, contraception, violence, inclusive language, and how communication skills and compassionate abortion care is key to providing access in Australia. This in-person training conceptualises skills and educates participants to seek out the best mode of practice for clients and their needs.
On completion of this workshop, you will:
- Have an understanding of key theoretical frameworks that underpin the reproductive rights movement, as well as concepts of RCA and clients’ rights to pregnancy options counselling.
- Understand how inclusive, non-judgmental language can acknowledge disclosure and affirm trauma-informed abortion care.
- Have knowledge of the history of abortion care and RCA.
- Acknowledge how a client’s context and can exacerbate barriers to access, particularly First Nations people and people with disabilities in Australia.
- Feel confident to practice compassionate abortion care with clients directly.
Note: While an intersectional lens has been embedded across this training, there is also a section of our online module which further explains intersectionality and its relationship to reproductive rights. It is assumed that everyone attending CbyC training has completed the short online information module before commencing the training.
