This two part workshop has been designed in collaboration with educators from the Tatiara Region. It will inspire you to explore the principles of Writing Workshop with the children you have spent most of this year getting to know - and to create a vision for how Writing Workshop will look in your learning space next year. After the first session, you will be ready to launch the Writing Workshop in your class. The second session will provide an opportunity to revisit the principles and begin planning for the children you have just met - whether they are 3 or 13!
Being a writer is more than knowing how to put pen to paper, or fingers to keyboard. Understanding how to craft effective writing to convey an intended message involves complex composing decisions alongside knowledge of language conventions. Strong writers think about their audience, the purpose for writing and select the most appropriate crafting techniques for their needs. They learn to think like a writer: collecting ideas for writing, thinking about word choice, sentence fluency, structure and how to bring authentic voice to their writing.
Can you imagine signing up for a class to learn piano from a teacher who does not actually play piano? This workshop will place particular emphasis on the importance of teachers writing themselves. Getting inside the head of a writer empowers teachers to make the thinking of a writer visible for the children they teach. Engaging in writing with and for your children is the most powerful tool a teacher of writing can have.
