Introduction to using computers (Windows)

Purpose: 

For those who need to know about how to use Windows - or to just understand more about the tools already used in Windows.

Note:  This course is not suitable for anyone who wants to learn Mac. 

Approach:

Each week, items for discussion will be identified, discussed, then practiced by the attendees with suggested exercises.  Most weeks reference sheet(s) will be distributed.  Each session runs between 2 to 3 hours (it will vary depending on the students, needs, and questions explored)

Approximate Timetable:

Week 1:  Introduction to Windows.  Windows Start up, Shut down, the Keyboard (including function keys) and the Mouse.  Also the Windows screen, Task Bar and other major Windows features.  Finally, connecting to the network (cable and WIFI)

Week 2:  The file system, Windows Explorer.  Managing your file system, naming conventions, backup of files.  Also discussed will be using memory sticks and portable hard drives.  Lastly, we will the discuss Adobe Acrobat reader.

Week 3:  Part 1:  OneDrive.  What is Microsoft OneDrive, how does it work, how can you use it to advantage.  Part 2:  Applications.  How to install and uninstall.

Week 4:  Browsers in Windows (Chrome, Edge, Firefox), Google searches and AI in Windows featuring Microsoft’s Copilot.  Also examined will be Google Maps and how it is different from the phone version.  Lastly, we will discuss email on your Windows system and how it relates to your phones email.

Week 5:  Email continued (if required).  Banking and paying bills using Windows.  Includes two factor authentication.

Week 6:  Printing from Windows, Other Widows settings, Common Keyboard shortcuts.  Installing printers.  Also discussed will be common errors and how to overcome them.  Room for topics requested by students.

Week 7:  Graphics editing.  GIMP, Microsoft Paint, etc – common techniques for editing graphics/photos.  Also discussed will be transferring of files from/to your Smart Phone.

Week 8:  Messaging and Video Calls from Windows.  Including WhatsApp, Viber, Messenger and your speakers, camera and microphone.  We will also touch on Teams and Zoom.  Finally we will look at how some programs need to have sound configured.

Week 9:  Recording Sound and Sound Editing using Audacity.  Also, we will explore the world of Games on Windows.  Lastly we look at Windows in the business world (Microsoft 365).
