Is it viable to specialise in Australia?: Lunchtime Learning by DBC
Event description
Is it viable to specialise in Australia?
An Australian perspective on a global phenomenon.
Presentation: Thursday 30 March 1 - 2 pm Australian EST (then on-demand + Q+A discussion in a slack channel)
Business strategists argue specialisation is the logical progression of a mature business.
They argue the move from being a generalist to a specialist is the natural life of a design studio.
And why not?
Specialisation is everywhere … when we have a specific need we choose a dermatologist over a GP; an orthodontist over a dentist; and even an artisan sourdough bakery over a supermarket shelf. Isn’t it common sense clients would hunt down a specialist for their design needs?
Blair Enns, of Win Without Pitching fame has long argued for specialisation. Over the past decade, touring the world (including Australia), he’s built a strong argument for creatives to specialise. Specialists become subject-matter experts and that commands higher fees.
Problem is, Blair’s game is in a different playing field to most of us.
Snapshot of Sunday March 5 2023: the population of the United States of America is 336 million people. Australia’s population is 26,288,282 — that’s
0.8% of the American population … a lot less clients across every client sector.
So population is a challenge, but that said, could Australian designers specialise?
Is specialisation viable in Australia?
March 30 we’re deep diving into design specialisation in Australia. We’re discussing the pros and the cons, and we’re sharing case studies of what works and what doesn’t, across different studios and client sectors.
Hope you can join us, either live, or to watch the presentation on demand at a time that suits you best.

Here’s what designers said about our last Lunchtime Learning…
‘I just wanted to say thank-you for the lunchtime presentation today. It was super useful and timely. I'm sure you hear it all the time but we really appreciated seeing dollar figures and real examples. It shone light on issues that we suspected and gave us some really pragmatic and valuable pathways forward. Thanks again - I think you've already helped us out.’ Sam Wearne - Studio ChenChen
