Scott McArdle: Jack of All Trades Workshop

Learn how to write, direct, and produce your own work from Scott McArdle - writer-director of Same Time Next Week and Playthings, and the showrunner of the local smash hit Improv RPG.

Covering everything from how to edit a script, applying for grants successfully, communicating with your team, and reaching your audience, Scott will take you through everything he's learned as an artist who has worked for major arts organisations, small venues, and independently.

Day #1: Producing - A crash course in grant writing, arts administration, relationship building, and working with venues.

Day #2: Writing - A practical look at the journey from idea to opening night and beyond. Demystifying the art of writing into a step-by-step approach to doing the work rather than letting it slip away.

Day #3: Directing - Bringing the page to life on stage and not being precious about the written word. How to lead collaboratively and creatively in-and-outside the rehearsal room.

*each day runs from 10:00AM - 4:00PM with a 45 minute lunch break

• This workshop is recommended for emerging and mid-career artists working in the independent sector but any-and-all are welcome.

• Spaces are limited to 12.

• Samson House is an accessible venue with no stairs and an accessible bathroom.

• Snacks, coffee, and tea will be provided but you are encouraged to bring your own lunch or walk into Fremantle to buy one on the day.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Scott is a Boorloo/Perth based artist, award-winning Game Master, and greyhound rescuer.

He is a sessional academic at the University of Notre Dame and has taught at Murdoch University, Curtin University, and WAAPA.

He was a resident writer at Black Swan State Theatre Company (2019-2022) and is a current teaching artist for the company.

Recent works include Same Time Next Week (touring WA in 2027), Playthings, Improv RPG, Josephine!, and Laika: A Staged Radio Play.

Scott is currently working on his debut novel, The Veiled Mirror (publication date: early 2028), a new Gothic musical with Jackson Harper Griggs, and a commissioned children's play (premiere: early 2027).
