The Empty Man is the rarest of films in the genre — one whose horror comes from its ideas, not jump scares.
A supernatural horror film based on a popular series of Boom! Studios graphic novels. After a group of teens from a small Midwestern town mysteriously disappear, the locals believe it is the work of an urban legend known as The Empty Man. A retired cop investigates and struggles to make sense of the stories. He discovers a secretive group attempting to summon a horrific mystical entity. Soon his life and the lives of those close to him are in grave danger.
The last film released by 20th Century Fox before the merger with Disney, no movie executive knew what to do with it. With almost no hype or marketing, it was dumped into limited theatres to quietly die during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic. This was a terrible shame because The Empty Man is one of the strangest, most original, and most intelligent horror films in years, even decades.
