Across the 70 minutes of invisible threads, Jacques Emery’s double bass creates a sonic landscape of continuous transformation.

Using conventional and extended techniques, alternative tunings and just intonation, Emery brings the double bass to the limits of its acoustic possibilities, moving between visceral sub-frequencies, glimmering harmonics and rapid bowstrokes.

Drawing on Emery’s intensive research into psychoacoustics and auditory perception, invisible threads is structured around the ear’s capacity to deconstruct complex sounds through repeated exposure. What first appears to be a single sound slowly separates into multiple interacting tones, exposing the partial tones - the "invisible threads" - that bind sounds together.

Immersive lighting by Erin Nortje extends this investigation into the visual realm, with lasers projecting the forms of soundwaves disturbing a pool of water. Together, sound and light create a shifting, contemplative environment in which minute changes in timbre become vast and immersive.

Following Emery and Nortje’s 2024 performance SUMMONING, described by Limelight Magazine as “casting the audience adrift in an undulating, shimmering world of sound”, invisible threads offers a deep listening experience that pushes the limits of perception and touches the transcendental.
