Description

A rural Iowa schoolteacher becomes a national voice against racism after leading a controversial 1968 lesson in discrimination with her all-white third-grade class. Now nearly ninety, she refuses to hold back amid today’s fights about race, history, and power after a lifetime of speaking out.

This short film and discussion are presented by the League of Women Voters of Lancaster County. Discussion panel members include Todd Mealy (educator and author of Shade of Brown, which inspired the documentary), Matt Johnson (a local Lancastrian), and others!

Doors open at 11:30am, with the film promptly starting at 12pm.

West Art was founded by Rufus Deakin and Josh Gibbel—two creative, community-driven minds united by a passion for art, music, and connection.

Rufus spent 17 years as a chef in London and Australia before settling in Lancaster with his wife, a local jeweler. After years of renovating unique homes across Europe and the U.S., he now splits his time between restaurant consulting and bringing West Art to life as a hub for creativity and culture.

Josh, a lifelong Lancastrian and longtime city resident, has been deeply involved in the local music scene and community for over 15 years. Through his work in home renovation and his dedication to grassroots connection, he’s helped shape the neighborhood he loves.

Together, Rufus and Josh are building West Art as a living room for Lancaster—a place where art happens, people gather, and community thrives.

The Space

Our 15,000 sq ft venue includes open studios, galleries, and two stage-equipped rooms—all anchored by a community coffee bar and art cooperative. West Art is a home for events, exhibitions, and collaboration.
