Haere Mai and Welcome to STEAMS School 2024!

STEAMS School is located on 12 Lord Rutherford Road in Brightwater and 173 Rutherford St. in Nelson. Our classes run from 9-245 except for Little STEAMerS which is from 9-12.

Important information:

• STEAMS School starts the first week of each term. If you just registered, we expect you to attend that week. TERM 1 2024 START DATE IS 13 FEBRUARY

• Students should wear comfortable clothing that may get dirty, bring morning tea, lunch, and a water bottle.

• Little STEAMerS need morning tea and a water bottle.

• Children with long hair need to have a hair tie in their bag in case they are using tools. A hat is advised for outside play.

Payment for STEAMS School

Payment is by term, with a cost of $63 per day plus GST for Junior and Senior students, $25 per day plus GST for Little STEAMerS. New students are on a paid three week trial then if both family and teacher feel there is a good fit for the child in the class they continue for the rest of the term and you are billed appropriately. Invoices are usually sent to everyone approximately 3 weeks into term.

Health and Safety

MOI has produced an extensive Risk Assessment of STEAMS School and the following has been identified as main areas in which we need compliance.

• Students need to wear shoes at all times at STEAMS School both inside and outside the classroom.

• Students need to stay within the boundaries set by their teachers while at STEAMS School

• Students need to be aware of the hazards associated with tools and wear protective eye covering when using.

Infectious Diseases

Infectious diseases can spread in a school setting, therefore, students or teachers with an infectious disease must be excluded until guidelines given by a medical doctor are followed. For the safety of your child, if there is a contagious outbreak in the school we will notify all parents of the type of infection involved. We would then follow guidelines from the health authority to ensure we minimised risk to students. If there is anything you think we need to know to manage such situation; for example, the immunisation status of your child, or any pre-existing conditions or medical complications please let us know so that we can cover our obligations to all families at STEAMS school.

In the event of a country wide outbreak, MOI will follow those guidelines set by the Ministry of Health and the local Ministry of Education.

STEAMS School maintains an accident register, if your child is injured in any way, an accident and injury form is completed and you will be notified of the injury at the end of the day.

Major injury procedure

MOI teacher will assess situation, call 1-1-1 first, then call you and/or your child’s emergency contact, the teacher will remain with the child until caregiver arrives. STEAMS School practices responses to natural hazards-earthquake, fire, and lockdown.

Behaviour Policy

Students are expected to be polite and respectful at STEAMS School to everyone. Behaviour deemed dangerous/disrespectful will not be tolerated.

Medicine Policy

STEAMS School teachers and staff cannot be held responsible for storing and/or administering on-going medicine to children.

1.PARENT OBLIGATIONS: If a child is to be administered medication at school parents must: confirm details of the medication in writing and when/how to use it. In the case of any medication the child will administer themselves, parents must specify this. Parents will ensure that all medicines are stored safely. There will be no risk of medicines being mixed up or tampered with by other children.

2.STAFF OBLIGATIONS: Keep a record of all medication on-site as provided by parent. All medical records kept by MOI are strictly confidential.

3.LABELLING: All medicines must be clearly labelled, showing the child’s name, and dosage.
