Event description

Want to get up close with some real fossils?

Join us at the South Australian Museum for a school holiday workshop 600 million years in the making. For participants aged 6-15 we’re pulling out some fossils that are normally kept behind the scenes to explore the vast changes life has experienced since the Ediacaran period, over 600 million years ago.

Participants will get hands on with a range of different fossils to create a to-scale geological timeline, including Ediacaran fauna, dinosaur bones, and megafauna fossils. Participants will then use their analytical skills to deduce the environments each fossil lived in and illustrate the timeline with the changing environments as well as the changing life forms. Microscopes will be available to check out tiny details of every fossil.

Led by a Museum scientist, join us as we take this epic journey through time to learn about the weird and wonderful creatures of the past.

Important Information:

  • This workshop is aimed at children aged 6 to 15 years.
  • An accompanying adult is required to stay with the participant for the duration of the workshop, accompanying adults do not need a ticket.
  • Participants will be required to work cooperatively in small and large groups with other participants they may not have met before.

Image Description: A selection of fossils in rock are set out around a geological timescale with small illustrations showing key fossil appearances through time.
