Description
Learn the art of traditional Japanese bookbinding in this hands-on workshop featuring the elegant Tortoise Shell stitch, a decorative thread-stitched spine pattern that turns the spine itself into a work of art.
Rather than hiding the binding, this technique puts it on full display, with an intricate woven pattern running along the outside edge of the spine, often paired with a beautifully finished traditional cover.
Originating in Japan, this binding style has long been used for journals, sketchbooks, and keepsakes, making it as practical as it is beautiful. You'll leave with a handmade, one-of-a-kind book ready for writing, drawing, or gifting, along with the skills to recreate the technique at home.
No prior bookbinding experience necessary!
Artist Bio
Kerry McAleer-Keeler (she/hers)
Kerry McAleer-Keeler is Associate Professor of Art and Design in printmaking and book arts at the Corcoran School of the Arts and Design, George Washington University, Washington, DC. She has taught at the Corcoran since 1998. Ms. McAleer-Keeler’s work has been selected for individual, group, and juried exhibitions throughout the U.S. and internationally and is represented in such publications as The Book as Art: Artists’ Books from the National Museum of Women In the Arts and 500 Handmade Books, Vol. 2 by Lark Books. She has recently moved to Leesburg from Fredericksburg, VA.

Not at all. This workshop is designed for all skill levels, from first-time binders to returning book artists. Every step of the stitch pattern will be demonstrated and repeated as needed.
