Jazz Orchestra Composer Series Presents Callum Allardice
Event description
The eleventh concert in our series of Aotearoa jazz composers features award winning composer and performer Callum Allardice, with a new suite of music for rhythm section and strings; Ode to Sadness.
A collection of songs, old and new, presented alongside some of the works that inspired them. From intimate improvisations and poignant melodies to soaring strings, the music moves through moments of reverence, reflection, and quiet triumph. Sometimes solemn, sometimes radiant, but always beautiful, Ode To Sadness is a celebration of the beauty found in sorrow.
Callum is an award-winning composer and guitarist based in New Zealand. He is a three-time recipient of the APRA Best Jazz Composition award for his works ‘Sons of Thunder’ (2016), ‘Deep Thought’ (2017), and ‘Chungin’ (2019). In 2020 he and his group The Jac, received the Recorded Music NZ Best Jazz Artist award for their album ‘A Gathering’, and in 2022 he was the inaugural Te Kōkī - New Zealand School of Music jazz composer-in-residence.
The Jazz Orchestra Composer Series showcases original music for large jazz ensemble by New Zealand composers. Concerts take place every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, from May to October, from 7pm. Tickets are $15, door sales $20.
