Event description

The Jazz Orchestra Composer Series is proud to kick off their program with one of Pōneke's rising talents; Theo Thompson, and his Mantle Septet.

"My recent compositions reflect my exploration of the relationship between jazz and classical and music. I’ve drawn inspiration from the environment of Aotearoa, the love of the people close to me, and the diverse and creative Wellington music scene. As a jazz composer, I delve into my personal world to bring a New Zealand connection and perspective to jazz music. From a young age I’ve been to as many jazz gigs as possible, always learning from all the incredible musicians and bands from Wellington. Jazz is only possible through collaboration, and I have been honoured to play alongside some of our best and most colourful musicians around town."

The Mantle Septet is comprised of a Jazz Trio and a String quartet. They have been playing together now for a while and have really found a unique sound taking on influences from many different kinds of music. Joining them on the 2nd of May will be the incredible Eden Brown (yawner, crumbly jack). The Mantle Septet featuring Eden Brown will not be one to miss. The music will be spontaneous, exciting and beautiful.

The Jazz Orchestra Composer Series showcases original music for large jazz ensemble by New Zealand composers. Concerts take place every 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, from May to October, from 7pm.
