Decarbonising the World with Johnathan Ring - Zincovery
Event description
Join Jonathan Ring, CEO of Zincovery as he shares his experiences of commercialising research developed with-in the University of Canterbury, and how they are on a pathway to helping decarbonise industry through the development of clean technology and the recycling of zinc.
About Zincovery:
Zincovery's mission is to decarbonize the zinc recycling industry. They have developed a technology that can produce recycled zinc with 95% fewer emissions and at 45% lower cost. After proving the technology at the laboratory scale and in a pilot plant at the University of Canterbury, Zincovery recently completed the first close of its Pre-A funding round, raising $9.1 million NZD, with a second close expected to reach $11 million NZD. This funding will be used to scale up 50X to an industrial demonstration plant, which will be built on a steel mill site that supplies the raw material.
Zincovery has a 10-year ambition to operate 10 commercial plants, generating over a billion dollars in revenue and avoiding 15 million tonnes of CO2 per year.
About Johnathan:
Jonathan (Jono) studied a Bachelor's in Chemical and Process Engineering at the University of Canterbury from 2014 to 2017. At the end of his degree, he had a chance conversation with one of the professors about the commercialization of a zinc recycling technology. Seeing postgraduate study as a low-risk opportunity to explore a business idea, Jono started a Master's in Engineering. This led to Jono and his professor, Aaron, founding Zincovery. Since then, Jono has led the company through three capital raises, securing a total of $13 million NZD, scaling the technology to a pilot stage, and growing the team to ten members.
Jono completed the UCE summer start-up program in 2019/2020, which helped him gain the commercial skills necessary for his successful transition from engineer to CEO.
