Greg Malcolm & Joseph McCallum

Event description

The guitar-drums duo has been a favourite of Greg Malcolm, and it is this combination featuring Joseph McCallum that will be performing at 03 Sessions. This collaboration has long been mooted by both Joe and Greg, and the improvised and experimental nature of the 03 Sessions seemed like a perfect opportunity to bring it to life.

Greg will steer his simultaneously played multiple guitar setup through various pieces, taking diversions where deemed interesting or unavoidable due to the unstable nature of his setup. Although always steering in a definite direction, the compositions remain fluid enough to morph in any way, and also in and out of each other.

Greg Malcolm plays a self-designed adapted guitar built by a New Zealand luthier Peter Stephen. This adapted guitar has pick-ups attached in such a way as to enable him to turn up sounds that are generally avoided such as guitar body noise, the sound of the string vibrating towards the nut, scrapes, etc.

Joseph McCallum is an incredible improvising drummer with much experience and a huge array of techniques and sounds. He is informed by the rich language of innovative percussionists from European improvised music, free jazz and New Music.

Strange and beautiful is the plan. This is sure to be a very special night indeed.
”Sometimes I think that the improvisational elements of my music come about by the unstable nature of my setup rather than any conscious decision to reinvent the tunes on each passing,” Malcolm, Downbeat.
"His customised instruments give him the reach of a miniature orchestra" David Keenan, The Wire March 2003
