JULY BUSH RAMBLE: Greenwood Lakes Forestdale
Event description
This July, join us for a bush ramble through Greenwood Lakes in Forestdale - an oasis within the Upper Oxley Creek catchment.
You're warmly invited to join ACF Brisbane South & Logan, in conjunction with Forest 4 Forestdale, on Sunday, July 6 for a morning adventure along the easy, mostly paved paths of Greenwood Lakes. Though the trail is accessible, the surrounding landscape is rich in bush-land character, offering a peaceful escape into nature just moments from suburbia.
Greenwood Lakes forms part of the Upper Oxley Creek catchment and sits within the Flinders–Greenbank–Karawatha Corridor - one of South East Queensland’s most important and last remaining stretches of connected bushland. This ecological corridor spans more than 60 kilometres and 56,000 hectares, providing a vital lifeline for countless native species, including those that are locally significant or threatened.
The name Greenwood Lakes fits with the Robin Hood-themed street names in the estate. Once used for sand mining, this area was rehabilitated and officially opened to the public in July 2004. Oxley Creek is known by the Yugera/Yugarabul people as Benarrawa.
Today, the park’s water bodies attract both people and wildlife seeking a place to recharge. Whether you come for bird-watching, a quiet walk, or simply to soak in the serenity, Greenwood Lakes invites you to discover your own connection to nature.
The park is a joy to visit year-round. After rain, the air fills with the chorus of frogs and the sound of flowing water. In drier times, sharp-eyed visitors may spot raptors soaring overhead, a resting powerful owl, or even a cotton-pygmy goose.
In recent years, exceptional wet weather has reshaped the appearance of the lakes - a living reminder of how we care for our urban landscapes and the delicate balance of creek systems. It’s a natural conversation starter as we ramble past the twin lakes and reflect on our relationship with this shared environment.
As we walk, we’ll take time to explore the unique features of this landscape and consider the small but meaningful ways we can all help protect it.
We’ll also be joined by a Birdlife expert to help us spot local species, and a guest with deep insight into the health and significance of the Oxley Creek catchment.
