Jumping Creek Walk - Warrandyte - Grade 3 (medium)

The Maroondah Club invites you to join them on the Jumping Creek Walk - Warrandyte.  This walk is part of the Try Bushwalking Month, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, the peak body representing 60+ bushwalking clubs across Victoria. 

This is a Medium grade walk that takes us through the local bushland of Warrandyte State park as we follow the Yarra River.  The hills and descents on this walk are quite moderate.  Some parts of the terrain may require scrambling over fallen logs and a short section of rocks, however the track intended was clear of logs when the recce was last undertaken.

DISTANCE:  12 km loop walk

WHO IS THIS WALK FOR? This is a walk intended for new bushwalkers and those interested in finding out what it’s like to walk with a club.  Participants should be comfortable walking for 2 - 3 hours at a time between breaks.

CHILDREN AND PETS:  This walk is for adults 18 years and over, and due to the nature of the walk, we ask you to leave dogs and other pets at home.  Please contact the club directly to inquire about service animals, and any family or pet friendly walks.  

AWT GRADE 3 (Medium):  There is a short rock scramble.  AWT Grade information. 

PACE: We will walk at a slow and steady pace, with time for people to stop to take photos and enjoy the surrounds.       

TOTAL ASCENT: 600 m - there are two 300 m hills.

WALK DESCRIPTION: 

This walk will follow the Yarra River upstream to Blue Tongue Bend. This is an undulating narrow track through trees with lovely river vistas and bush. Lots of short ups and downs.  We will follow a narrow bush track to a little bit of serenity for a morning tea stop. Another narrow bush track leads out to a wide maintenance track where we will climb, providing us with views across the river valley and surrounding countryside. After the wide track we join the 'nature walk trail' through a lovely grotto with covered walkways. 

A short section on the maintenance road leads us to another small track up to Jumping Creek Road.  Here, we follow a new wide path along Jumping Creek Road, onto a small joining road that will lead us towards Black Flat. Bush tracks through an old gold area and back to the river. 

Following a narrow rocky track upstream leads us back towards the start of our walk again, with river vistas along the way. One section involves a short rock scrabble.  Lunch may be on this section of the track so bring something to sit on. Hopefully we will see or hear birds, and possibly some wildflowers. 

As there are rocky sections and if there has been recent rain, some sections will be muddy or slippery, poles are recommended.

MEETING POINT:  Meet at Jumping Creek Reserve, car park near toilets.

DIRECTIONS/CARPOOLING: The meeting area is fully accessible by car, no off-road driving required.  As the walk is an out and back, there is no need for carpooling to the start or from the end of the walk.  Google map: https://maps.app.goo.gl/smkqfJjBtVjcfUCy6

PUBLIC TRANSPORT:  Bus route 364 stopping near the corner of Hogan Avenue and Ringwood – Warrandyte Rd, (from Ringwood train station) is within 650 m of the walk start.  If you are catching the bus, there may be someone who can pick you up/drop you off. A matter of organising beforehand.  Talk to the leader.

TOILETS: There will be toilets at the start/end of the walk (but there are plenty of trees).

EXTRA INFORMATION:

Warrandyte State Park is a great place to enjoy some bushwalking, and this planned walk takes us from Jumping Creek Reserve upstream beside the Yarra River.  This is the closest State Park to Melbourne and has a variety of wildlife species ranging from Eastern Grey Kangaroos, Swamp Wallabies and Short Beaked Echidnas through to Wombats, Platypus, all sort of possums and a large variety of birdlife, including the Powerful Owl, Kingfishers, Honeyeaters, Rosellas and lots more.  There may even be the odd snake, but that would be unusual as they hear us long before we see them.
