Junior Whale Scientist
Event description
One of the best things about Victor Harbor is that Southern Right Whales visit the waters of Encounter Bay every year to give birth and nurse their young. The Encounter Bay Right Whale Study Group (EBRWS) have been documenting the whales that visit Encounter Bay since 2009. Through perseverance, and countless hours watching these animals, EBRWS has identified numerous individuals and documented their visits (and births) over time. EBRWS also contribute to the Australian Right Whale Photo Identification Catalogue to understand population demographics and links between health, foraging ecology and Southern Ocean climatic variability. Their efforts are key to helping the Southern Right Whale recover from historical whaling that decimated their population, leading them to being listed as Endangered under the EPBC Act.
Fleurieu Marine Education is partnering with the Encounter Bay Right Whale Study group to put on a special workshop for children aged 8-14yrs as part of National Science Week.
Children will get to learn how to identify whales to the species level, as well as learn how individual whales are identified.
Join us for a whaley-good afternoon learning about whales!
