Justin Lees Solo Exhibition Opening Night
Event description
Following his time in London, Justin Lees travelled to France for an artist residency at the storied Château Bothenvillers. Days unfolded slowly in the stillness of the countryside, framed by the soft weight of winter light and the quiet rhythm of stone halls and creaking floors. From the château, he took small journeys outward — a day in Bonneval by the river Loir, afternoons wandering through the grandeur of Blois and Chambord — each place offering its own textures, colours, and moments to carry back to the studio.
The works in this exhibition weave together paintings from his previous two series with new pieces shaped by this period abroad. They speak in layers — of movement and pause, of the intimacy of a studio in a foreign place, of time spent watching the world narrow to the sound of brushes in water and the smell of oil and turpentine. Together they form a body of work that holds both the immediacy of memory and the slow-burn of experience, where landscapes and moments are not recorded as they were seen, but as they were felt.
