Meat Free Mondays travels to Jutland, Denmark with Grace Cussell!

Grace participated in a Rotary Youth Exchange ten years ago this year, residing in Randers on Jylland, Denmark's 7th largest city. She immersed herself in the life there, blending into her host family and learning fluent Danish. The experience had a profound impact on her, and Jutland became like a second home. Since returning to NZ, Grace has joined the Danish society, hosted lots of Danish exchange students, and still incorporates Danish traditions into her life. This Meat Free Mondays meal will be a tribute to her adopted mother country and her Danish host dad, who sadly passed from cancer only a few months ago. Grace has decided to subsidise the ingredients so that she can really pull out all the stops and do him proud. She will also donate the koha MFM gives her to the Danish Cancer Institute in his honour, and hopes that you may feel moved to contribute also. There will be a donation option on the ticketing page, and a donation box on the night.

Here is the wonderful menu Grace has planned for us...

Entrée - Smørrebrød, Denmark's great culinary institution: open rye bread topped with Mushroom Leverpostej.

Main - Tarteletter, Frikadeller med brunsovs, Brunede kartofler and Rødkål
A proper Danish family table: 'meat'balls and gravy, caramelised potatoes, sharp red cabbage, and the old-fashioned formality of tarteletter (creamy mushroom asparagus tarts).

Dessert - An ode to Danish 'Hygge' (pronounced "hoo-ga") - a cultural concept that means creating a cosy, warm atmosphere and enjoying the good things in life with people you care about. This will be embodied in Risalamande med kirsebærsauce - rice pudding with its hidden lucky almond & cherry compote; Kransekage & Pebernødder - marzipan cakes and little cookies that are like the Danes' answer to gingernuts.
