K5 Calicivirus for Rabbit Control Distribution Day - Strathalbyn (12 March)
Event description
Rising numbers of feral rabbits pose significant threats to gardens, agriculture and the environment in the Hills and Fleurieu region.
If your property is smaller than 1,000 square metres, or if you are not comfortable using pindone-treated carrots, K5 calicivirus is an alternative control method.
There are no off-target risks when using K5 calicivirus-treated carrots as the virus only affects rabbits. Please be aware that the effectiveness of K5 is highly variable (20-80% effective), and dependent on any pre-existing immunity. K5 can be effective at the release site but appears to have a short-term impact with limited ability to spread.
Please note, the online mandatory training is not required to purchase K5 calicivirus-treated carrots as it is with pindone.
It’s important to pre-feed with untreated diced carrots prior to picking up your calicivirus-treated carrots. Once K5 is mixed with carrots it must be used on that day. It can’t be refrigerated or frozen for later use. Your email confirmation will step this out for you.
Please bring a bucket, tub or plastic bags to collect your carrot bait.
Cost: Discount price for K5 calicivirus $28.
