Event description
Kai Commitment is a voluntary agreement among leading food sector businesses designed to reduce food waste, and
emissions from food waste, across Aotearoa’s food supply chain. Kai Commitment is focused on bringing the
world’s best practice in food waste prevention and reduction to the food industry.
Launching in November 2022, supported by the Ministry for the Environment, with founding signatories; Countdown, Goodman Fielder, Fonterra and Silver Fern Farms, Kai Commitment is here to support businesses like yours to;
- Set a target and actions to reduce food waste and measure your progress, supported by global best practice
- Have the opportunity to identify cost savings and new revenue streams
- Collaborate across the supply chain on shared food waste challenges
- Showcase leadership and success, including through collective reporting
Globally, an estimated 40% (2.5 billion tonnes) of all food produced for human consumption is wasted from farm to
fork each year. Voluntary agreements have proven to reduce food waste and business costs internationally and have
been identified in New Zealand's Emissions Reduction Plan as a key action to impact climate change.
Aotearoa New Zealand is ready for a more sustainable food system, your business can be a part of that from the beginning.
Before we launch, your organisation is invited to find out more about this initiative and whether it aligns to your
sustainability priorities. The option to join before launch and demonstrate your leadership on food waste is
available.
