    Event description

SEE Change Woden invites you to this special sustainable home tour of a passive house in Kambah. Owners Kevin and Fiona are very kindly opening their doors for others to learn from and be inspired by their sustainable home. The house is still a work in progress and a construction site so please wear firm shoes or boots.

This sustainable house tour had to be rescheduled due to the rain. This new date of 30th October will go ahead whatever the weather! The outside area may not be able to be viewed if the rain has again created a swap but there will still be many features of solar passive design inside the home to explore.

Kevin and Fiona, decided to extend their existing house and convert it to  meet the passive house retrofit standard.  Kevin committed himself to this task as an owner-builder, working part-time, with only occasional help.  They continue living in the house during the conversion.  The project is a huge undertaking.

The potential for the completed house is excellent.  It has large north facing exposure on the side of a hill with beautiful views and no over shadowing.

The exact address will be sent to you via email closer to the date. There are 20 spaces available in this tour, please confirm your place by registering.

Site accessibility: Access to the main floor of the house is through the front door up a ramp so easy for people with walking difficulties. Downstairs is more difficult involving walking down a dirt slope.

Please do not attend if you are feeling unwell or have been a close contact of someone with COVID-19. You are welcome to wear a face mask.

Details on the passive house build:
The problem with the existing house was its large western and eastern exposure which Kevin and Fiona have had to bear for quite a few years.  Their extension and conversion remove this problem.

    Completed to date:-

    • A tool shed under the extended living room
    • Thick Insulation and breathable membrane under the existing house
    • Thick wall insulation and membrane to existing house
    • Floors and framing for complete house and attached flat.
    • Special double roof structure on the existing house with taped plywood, blown insulation, roof membrane and joint taping
    • Rendering and ventilation grills for all lower brickwork.
    • Garage and entry porch – concrete floor, recycled brick walls, windows and roof framing with temporary tarpaulins
    • All windows which are Aluminium/timber framed, triple glazed, Argon filled, double low e (high spec)
    • Triple glazed Al/timber front door
    • Aerated concrete floor for the first floor of the extension
    • Plywood cover over roof trusses on extension with tarps covering the plywood

     Yet to be completed:

Too numerous to mention but the build is already about half complete so is in a good state to see progress and what has yet to be done.  Ramp is available to the front door for easy access.
