Join us for a FREE, all-ages day out exploring the environment, wildlife, recreation and heritage that make this place so special. Get hands-on with interactive displays, meet local experts and organisations, and enjoy family favourites like face painting and our colouring competition, plus discounted tours at Seahorse World and Platypus House.
The Kanamaluka / Tamar Discovery Day, organised by the Tamar Estuary and Esk Rivers (TEER) Program, is your chance to connect with this remarkable ecosystem and the community working to protect it.

TEER Program
Three immersive, hands-on activities. Watch tiny aquatic creatures come to life under the microscope, become a water-quality detective using real monitoring equipment (crack the clues and win a prize!), and duck into the mysterious wetland box with a UV torch to reveal hidden creatures and surprising facts.
Birdlife Tasmania
Discover the bird species that call the Kanamaluka / Tamar estuary home, with hands-on displays and info from Birdlife Australia.
AMC Search
See the Australian Maritime College's autonomous vehicles up close, including Autonomous Underwater Vehicles and Uncrewed Surface Vessels on display at the wharf. Weather permitting, kids can even try remotely operating a Wave Adaptive Modular Uncrewed Surface Vessel (WAM USV) from a mobile control centre.
MTWAC, IMAS & UTAS
Meet the MTWAC team and learn about their work caring for Country, with interactive displays of shells, sand and kelp. Teaming up with IMAS, the whole family can learn how to age a fish, try fish tagging, and get involved in the fish frames program.
Tamar NRM
Discover what's living beneath the surface of the Kanamaluka / Tamar estuary's tributaries, dams and creeks. Join Tamar NRM to get up close with waterbugs, check out the water investigation equipment, and find out what these tiny creatures can tell us about water health.
Tasmania Parks and Wildlife Service
Find out all about the Tamar Island Wetlands Reserve and its visitor centre. There's plenty for the whole family to learn about our local wetlands, including a taxidermy display, national parks passports and activities for little nature adventurers.
West Tamar Landcare
Explore an interactive map of local Landcare projects and see how the community is working to restore and protect our waterways.
Rethink Waste
Turn trash into treasure with this hands-on activity for ages 7 and up. Learn to weave baskets from soft plastic, a common source of litter along the Kanamaluka / Tamar, and make something beautiful while keeping materials out of landfill. Then put your recycling skills to the test and get the information you need to set your sorting straight.
