Event description

Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC) invites you to join us for a special evening at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary. Karakamia, named for the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo (“Karak”) is the birthplace of AWC. Covering 275 hectares and containing a diversity of habitats – such as Jarrah Forest, Marri and Wandoo woodland – the sanctuary supports a high number of native species. It is a vitally important conservation project being the first large feral cat- and fox-free area established in Western Australia in 1994.

In the absence of these feral predators, Karakamia now hosts one of the most significant remaining wild populations of the critically endangered Woylie (Brush-tailed Bettong). The sanctuary also hosts important populations of other threatened and declining mammals including the Tammar Wallaby and the Quenda. A number of species present in the region, including the Koomal (Brushtail Possum) and Mardo (Yellow-footed Antechinus), have also benefited from this predator exclusion.

In addition to mammals found on the property, the sanctuary is also home to 32 reptiles, 12 amphibians and over 120 bird species, including two threatened species of White-tailed Black Cockatoo and the rare forest sub-species of the magnificent Red-tailed Black-cockatoo.

Join us on a guided tour led by one of our Ecologist Guides, where you’ll discover what makes Karakamia so special.
