Kathrin Longhurst’s practice dismantles patriarchal structures, researching the notion of the female gaze by subverting gender stereotypes of socialist realism portraiture to highlight the importance of empathetic engagement to navigate and affect change in our contemporary sociological and political context. Born during the Cold War in East Berlin, Longhurst’s practice is deeply informed by her lived experience of rigid ideals dictated by a totalitarian regime. Which finds her subverting propaganda aesthetics into contemporary contexts.

Coinciding with Refugee Week, Collective Threads is a cross-cultural community conversation through the lens of Longhurst's paintings and video installation led by strong Iranian-Australian voices. This exhibition encapsulates the power of freedom of choice through the agency of art. It is centred on strength, solidarity, and the power of reclaiming public space. Amplifying defiance against gender apartheid and the persecution of difference, but most importantly, enshrining the deep bonds of community and chosen family—celebrating women supporting women in living boldly and authentically.
