Description

How can we make sure climate action helps shape the priorities of Aotearoa’s next government?

Coalition negotiations are an important opportunity to influence the direction and priorities of the next government. For Aotearoa’s climate movement, this is a moment to come together, share perspectives and consider how we can make our collective voices heard.

Join us for our November Community Climate Action Network (CCAN) Hui, featuring a panel of experienced voices from politics, government relations, community building and climate advocacy.

Meet our panellists

Holly Suzanne Bennett – Managing Director, Awhi

A lawyer, government relations specialist and advocate for accessible, transparent government, Holly founded Awhi and Engage, New Zealand’s leading government relations training organisation.

Gareth Hughes – Director, WEAll Aotearoa

An MP for more than a decade, Gareth is now an author and political commentator for RNZ. Before entering Parliament, he worked as a climate campaigner at Greenpeace, giving him experience in both politics and environmental advocacy.

Selva Ganapathy – Low Carbon Specialist

With more than 20 years’ experience in community building, Selva brings deep expertise in mobilising communities, connecting people and turning shared ideas into collective action. He joins the hui in a personal capacity.

[Fourth panellist – TBC]

Together, our panellists will explore:

  • What the current political landscape means for climate action in Aotearoa

  • Opportunities to influence the priorities and direction of the next government

  • How community organisations and the wider climate movement can engage with decision-makers and make a compelling case for climate action

  • Where we can work together to build collective influence and turn opportunities into action

This will be a facilitated panel discussion with space for questions, shared perspectives and connection across the CCAN network. These discussions, along with insights from attendees, will help shape an Open Letter from the Community Climate Action Network to the incoming government.

The decisions made during coalition negotiations will help shape Aotearoa’s future. Let’s make sure the climate movement has a voice in them.

Lunch will be provided during informal networking after the formal part of the Hui concludes.

We look forward to seeing you there!
