Key Strategies: Secondary School Setting

Professional Development General Workshop

Suitable for professionals supporting individuals of age 12-18.

This session acknowledges that the secondary school journey is very different
to that of the primary school journey and things can often become ‘wobbly’
for autistic students during high school years as the consistency of primary
school is replaced by the changeable and complex nature of secondary school.
The skills and attitudes developed in high school will set a foundation for post
school opportunities, making support during this time so important. The content delivered in this workshop will give educators who already have a sound understanding of autism, the knowledge and practical skills to effectively support students on the spectrum during their secondary school years.

Topics include:

  • The Learner Profile of students on the spectrum;
  • Organisation and self-management strategies;
  • Effectively differentiating the curriculum;
  • Enhancing communication;
  • Supporting social interaction and social conflict;
  • Positive behaviour strategies; and
  • Understanding sensory processing and the impact on the student.

NB: The content of this session is the same as the strategies component of the Autism and key strategies: secondary school setting, where the presenter will focus solely on the strategies without an overview of understanding autism

All participants will receive a certificate with the workshop title, the number of hours and will state that the training links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (where appropriate).

Professional Development Workshops are designed for any professional that support an individual on the autism spectrum.

If this workshop is full, please contact Emma Bennett on ebennett@autismsa.org.au.

Workshop Definitions:

GENERAL WORKSHOPS are designed to give participants an introduction to
understanding the autism spectrum and provides workshop participants with the knowledge of key strategies to support individuals in a range of settings

IN FOCUS WORKSHOPS are designed for participants who have a good, current
understanding of autism and are looking for a more in-depth understanding
relating to a particular area of the autism field. This greater knowledge in turn
provides greater confidence in applying strategies to support individuals in this
area. It is recommended that participants attend an Autism SA General Workshop prior to attending an In-Focus Workshop or Masterclass unless they have a good, current understanding of autism.

MASTERCLASS WORKSHOPS are based on the concept that there is always more to learn. Masterclasses are short intensive workshops that are designed to provide participants who already have a sound current understanding of autism, with specific and extended content relating to a particular topic, strategy or program.
