Event description

Join Tzedek Collective for the fifth night of Khanukah as we gather to reflect, support each other, and prepare for action at the Annandale Community Centre - Back Hall, on the lands of the Gadigal people.

Hanukkah/Channuka/Khanukah is a non-biblical Jewish ‘festival of lights’, set against the historical backdrop of the Maccabean revolt against the Seleucid Empire in the 2nd century BCE, the Hebrew word ‘Khanukah’  חֲנֻכָּה means “dedication,” celebrating the rededication of the Holy Temple and the miracle of one-day supply of olive oil lasting eight days until new oil could be prepared under conditions of ritual purity.

  • Potluck (please bring vegetarian food to share with ingredients labelled)
  • Candle lighting (bring your own chanukiyah/menorah/candelabra and candles)
  • Dreidel game (bring your dreidel and gelt)
  • Drash and discussion
  • Singing

Food 

This event will have a potluck so please bring a vegetarian dish, with ingredients labelled, to share if you want to and are able to, but it's optional.

Registration and Donations

Registration is on a tiered basis based on your ability (we offer $15 tickets, $10 tickets, and $0 tickets).

Ticket registration fees will go towards covering our expenses ($485). Any funds raised over our needs will be donated to The Blak Caucus. Once costs are covered there will be only free tickets available, please then donate to The Blak Caucus as you wish and able to.

This event is mainly aimed towards anti-zionist Jews looking to observe the holiday. Allies are welcome to attend, but this is not a primarily educational event.

Accessibility

Annandale Community Centre Back Hall has the following mobility accessibility features:

  • Ramp access
  • Wheelchair accessible
  • Accessible toilet
  • Accessible parking space

There is no on-site parking other than the accessible parking space. There is limited on-street parking only (metered and/or restricted time). There are limited public transport options. The closest bus stop is on the corner of Booth Street and Johnston Street with the 470 bus stopping every 20 -30 minutes. If transportation is an accessibility barrier for you, please let us know and we will try to facilitate a carpooling arrangement though this cannot be guaranteed.

Please let us know your accessibility needs in your registration and we will do our best to accommodate them. Please be mindful that we are a volunteer-based collective and our capacity is limited, we apologise in advance for any inconvenience.

COVID Protocol

As members of our community may be immunocompromised we ask that you do not attend if you are ill. Attendees are welcome to wear a mask for any reason for any portion of the event. Face masks will be provided for those wishing to wear one.

Tzedek Collective acknowledges the Traditional owners of the places where we gather and are based in; the Dharug and Tharawal people. Sovereignty was never ceded. Always was, always will be, Aboriginal land.
