Matariki – Time to Review, Reflect & Reset

Kua haehae ngā hihi o Matariki.
The rays of Matariki are spread.

People say this whakataukī when Matariki can be seen bright in the night sky. The rays of its stars are thought to carry messages for the people. For Māori, this time signifies remembrance, fertility and celebration.

Matariki celebrations were popular before the arrival of Europeans in New Zealand, and they continued into the 1900s. Gradually they dwindled, with one of the last traditional festivals recorded in the 1940s. At the beginning of the 21st century Matariki celebrations were revived. Their increasing popularity has led to Matariki being named as an official public holiday from 2022.

As we move into Matariki, it is a time to reset, to look to our goals for the time ahead and discuss the aspects of self and personal growth we would like to nurture.

Presented by Tuihana Ohia, this reflective workshop will enable participants to review their past year and assess how they have grown and the personal goals they achieved.

Tuihana Ohia (Ngāi te Rangi, Ngāti Pukenga, Te Arawa, Ngāi Pākehā) has been involved in the design and implementation of a number of significant wellbeing initiatives including Vodafone’s Manaaki Support Network and Te Wānanga o Aotearoa’s wellbeing programme Tau Ora.

Her passion for nurturing emerging leaders and embedding wellbeing within communities and corporate spaces led her to create Rāngai – The Wellbeing Collective. This provides a space for those working with or who have an interest in wellbeing to meet, exchange knowledge, creativity, and to support innovation.

Tuihana’s approach is that the workshop while set for workplaces, the thinking and application goes beyond to be inclusive of community, home and whānau.  At the conclusion you will have an understanding of how this workshop, the practices and tools can be applied for the unique challenges of the community and NGO sector.
